ATiT met with its 7 MEDEAnet partners in Bucharest on 23-24 April for an appraisal and planning meeting. Hosted by the Romanian partner, the NGO ActiveWatch, this meeting focused on supporting the developing the Media & Learning network, how to facilitate the steady growth of the network and plans for the coming 6 months. Partners’ workshop and webinar plans and the preparation of the 2012 report on the status of media education and media literacy in partners’ countries occupied much of the discussion along with discussions about the launch of the new Media & Learning Association.

If you would like to Join us in Brussels on 11-13 December 2013 for the Media & Learning Conference  to meet fellow practitioners and policy makers who are interested in media-supported learning you are invited to apply for a grant under the Comenius, Grundtvig or Erasmus funding programmes of the European Commission to attend this conference before the deadline of 30 April 2013.

The full cost of participation in this 3-day residential course is € 873.50, this covers the costs of accommodation, conference registration and materials, as well as travel. Funding to cover the full cost of participation is available to non-Belgian residents within the European Union, and is available through the European Commission programmes Comenius (for staff in school education) and Grundtvig programme (for staff in adult education).

The main theme for the 2013 edition of the Media & Learning conference taking place in Brussels on 12-13 December is Media Education and Literacy: Equipping Learners for Open, Creative Learning Futures. This theme will be at the heart of a unique conference programme aimed at exploring the role of creativity and innovation in education and training against the backdrop of dramatic change in how, where and what learners learn. Conference themes include e-Safety, Media-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teaching, Creating and curating open educational media resources and data analytics. A series of 3 hour-long webinars will take place in December on the subject of work based learning and the experiences of the E-ViEW project team who have been developing and piloting a European Virtual Campus aimed at learners who want to enhance their management skills and competences within a European context. Each webinar lasts from 16:30 to 17:30 CET and they will take place on 5 December, 12 December and 19 December. Participation in these webinars is free but you need to register online to be sure of a place.

The Media & Learning Conference 2012 was a splendid success with 282 participants from 41 countries and tons of interesting presentations about developping digital and media skills in education and finding new and effective ways to embed media into the learning process. The conference took place on 14-15 November 2012 in the Flemish Ministry of Education and Training headquarters in Brussels. Presentations and recordings will be shared on the conference website shortly.

This annual conference is organised by the Flemish Ministry of Education and ATiT with the support and help of the European Commission DGEAC.

The French entry 'Quand la colère fait tomber les masques' is the winner of the MEDEA Award for Professionally Produced Educational Media 2012 and the Greek entry 'And the Oscar goes to ...' is the winner of the MEDEA Award for User-Generated Educational Media 2012. These and 4 special prize winners were announced during the MEDEA Awards Ceremony which took place 14 November 2012 as part of the Media & Learning Conference 2012 in the Flemish Ministry of Education and Training headquarters in Brussels.

The REC:all project management team met in Amsterdam to discuss the progress of the project over the last year. The first draft versions of the pedagogical, technological and legal reports are being discussed in order to present them to the European lecture capture recording community during the first REC:all workshop in Leuven on 13 November 2012.

At the workshop case studies will be presented about different forms of lecture capture use. Amongst the speakers there are Dr Daniel Tan from the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Roman Verraest from the KU Leuven, Carlos Turro from the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, Stuart Phillipson from the Manchester University & Opencast Matterhorn, Marko Pussaar from the Estonian Information Technology College.

After the presentations there will be a Q&A session where you have the opportunity to connect with industry experts on video conference, lecture capture and screencasting. There you can expect: Anton Bollen from TechSmith, Linda Storey from Echo360, Marci Powell from Polycom and Ray Hassell from Mediasite.

In the afternoon everyone is invited to attend a World Café to discuss the main challenges and the issues around the use of lecture capture nowadays. The day will be concluded with a final panel to discuss the main outcomes of the World café.

ATiT staff met with its Web2LLP partners at the second project meeting which took place last week on 4-5 October 2012 in the warm and culture-rich city of Florence, Italy. With this project we aim to improve web strategies and maximise the social media presence of lifelong learning projects.

During the meeting the partners discussed the results of the user needs analysis of LLP project managers' use of social media in their web strategies.120 responses are being analysed which are being used to inform both the online and face-to-face training which will take place in the first part of 2013 and which ATiT is organising. In the coming months, the partners will be finalising and publishing interviews with project managers showcasing good practice in the use of social media for dissemination and valorisation purposes as well as preparing 2 handbooks on establishing efficient web strategies and integrating social media.
